‘SMOKEFREE’ early at the Royals Shopping Centre

Wednesday 2nd May 2007

In preparation for the national ban on smoking within enclosed public spaces which comes into effect on 1st July 2007, The Royals Shopping Centre in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, has taken the SMOKE FREE step early and is now completely smoke free as from 1st May 2007.

The Royals Shopping Centre has only allowed smoking in designated areas such as Café Giardino’s since Jan 2001, making a total ban on smoking the obvious next step in continuing to provide a pleasant and healthy atmosphere for people to shop in.

Centre Manager, Dawn Jeakings, said of the change
“The total smoking ban in the centre has been very well observed so far, with no complaints or problems, although we will obviously keep an eye on things to make sure everything continues to run smoothly. I would also like to thank all of our shoppers who are smokers and have refrained from smoking in the Centre“.

A large countdown clock and information screen in the shape of a cigarette box has been installed under the dome in The Royals (see pictures provided), with the aim of highlighting the change in the national smoking policy whilst also giving healthy advice on the dangers of smoking.

Further activities will be taking place in association with the Southend Primary Healthcare Trust within The Royals around the national ban in July, to provide more information on the reasons to quit smoking and the help available.

For more information on The Royals Shopping Centre and it’s smoke free policy, please contact the Centre Manager, Dawn Jeakings, on 01702 461 650 or centremanagement@royalsshopingcentre.co.uk.
