Trinity Mind Body and Soul at The Royals

August 2008

Trinity Mind Body and Soul have worked alongside young people from Belfairs Secondary School to help create an interactive space that celebrates 20 years of The Royals Shopping Centre.

Trinity Mind Body and Soul work with young people who struggle to learn within the structure of mainstream education. It is their aim to raise their self-esteem and help them recognise their true potential, through finding a real solution to a real problem.

At The Royals, the young people have been keen to create an interactive space that promotes Southend, as well as breaking down barriers between the generations. In order to do this, they have interviewed some shoppers around the centre to find out why they love Southend, in conjunction with this they have created their own artwork to represent their views of Southend.

Throughout the project the young people have worked as a team, learning to overcome divides within their own friendship groups. This has not been an easy process, especially when unfortunately due to a misunderstanding one week they had to start the project from scratch. This incident showed how they had developed in maturity, as they were determined to complete the task to an even higher standard.

The project has encouraged them to find their own identity, through designing their own t-shirts to express themselves, as well as photos and the production of their very own DVD.

A member of the Trinity Mind Body and Soul team said "As a team we have been encouraged by the development of their communication skills and focus on the given task.

The staff at The Royals have been really supportive of the team and it has been a pleasure to work in an area where young people are represented in a positive light!"

Dawn Jeakings, Centre Manager at The Royals added "The Royals is always glad to get involved with the local community, so we are very proud to have had the Trinity Mind Body and Soul team and the young people from Belfairs Secondary School working in the centre as part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations. They've all worked very hard and their project has really captured the essence of Southend."
