Bags of style: Fashion students produce exclusive ‘limited edition’ reusable bag for The Royals Shopping Centre

April 2010

A group of Fashion students from South Essex College of Further & Higher Education showed they have ‘bags of talent’ when they were commissioned to produce a re-usable bag exclusively for The Royals Shopping Centre as part of one of their projects.

Dawn Jeakings, The Royals Shopping Centre Manager, said: “This is really exciting as it's the first time The Royals has produced its own reusable bag. We've been working with South Essex College and its students to develop designs that help underline our ongoing commitment to sustainable shopping and reduce the amount of plastic bags being used. And, of course, it also shows off our passion for promoting the best in cutting edge fashion.”

Over 50 calico bag designs were created for the project, entitled ‘handbags and gladrags’, and are now on display in The Royals Shopping Centre, showing off the inspired and wide-ranging designs from the second year BND Fashion and Clothing (Fashion Promotion) students.

The overall winner was chosen as Vicky Bell, 17, from Rayleigh. She said: “Projects such as this give us a fantastic real world experience and I can’t wait to see people wearing my bag as with its design and it being beaded it is essentially an accessory as well. The illustration I used on my design was a girl in a maxi dress – which is in this season - and I wanted to ensure that people could still see the image clearly when wearing it.”

The winning design has been produced as a ‘limited edition’ reusable bag and available to buy, priced at only £2, it is sure to become one of the ‘must have’ accessories of the season.

The bag goes on sale on Saturday 1st May and will form part of a FREE decoration workshop run by the students from 11am – 4pm so customers can personalise their very own reusable bag, showing how they could become the next Louis Vuitton or Mulberry.
