Fashion Show is by ‘Royals’ Appointment

The glitz and glam of London Fashion Week may have just come to a close but Fashion students from South Essex College kept the spirit alive by putting on their own runway at The Royals Shopping Centre in Southend.

The free event, on Saturday 24th March, heralded the launch of the shopping centre’s Spring collection from the likes of Debenhams, TK Maxx, Primark and Evans, whose clothes will be made their way up and down the catwalk, along with student-created collections over three shows throughout the day.

Dawn Jeakings, Centre Manager for The Royals Shopping Centre, said: “We’ve always looked at doing a fashion show as a community event and we thought it was a great opportunity to help students gain more experience. Also, what better way to see the next season’s trends than on a catwalk. Shopping online is all well and good, but live events such as this beat it hands down.”

She added: “It will also help raise awareness of the range of shops that we have in the centre, no matter what your budget. So, together with The Royals Shopping Centre and South Essex College we can help ensure that the people of Southend are the best-dressed shoppers in Essex!”

This is the first big project that the Foundation Degree Fashion, Communication & Marketing students have worked on as a group.

Sophie Polak, 19, from Romford, said: “The fashion show at The Royals is a fantastic brief, as it is one that is an actual event and will give us all a great insight into the ins and outs of organising a catwalk show for the public. It’s also something that will really standout on our CVs so is an amazing opportunity for all of us.”

The students have all been given their own shops to work with and have picked styling the outfits for their catwalk appearances. Asked about what was hot for the Spring season for Women, Jade Koenig , 20, from Burnham-on-Crouch, added: “This Spring it’s going to be very much about pastel colours and we are also seeing a sports trend emerging with the Olympics just round the corner.

The only male student on the course, Chris Nickson, 19, from Southend, has had his pick of the men’s collection. Originally hailing from Liverpool, he moved to Southend especially for the Foundation Degree course, as there isn't another course like it in the country. His tip for men this coming season is that it's going to be very preppy with suits.

Other shops involved in the fashion extravaganza of the season are Sarah Beth Jewellers, Pandora, Fashion HQ, Poundland, Vision Express, Boots and Toni and Guy.
